Chief Investment Officer Magazine has named Craig Barker a winner in its 2016 Industry Innovation Awards, which recognize excellence in institutional investing. Barker is senior vice president of financial services, chief financial officer and chief investment officer for the University of Arizona Foundation.

The UA Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to advancing the university through fundraising and stewardship of donated funds. Barker manages the foundation’s $852 million asset base in partnership with a board of trustees.

The magazine’s announcement cites Barker’s establishment of long-term effective strategic partnerships and his “radical transparency” in making detailed financial information available to donors and other interested parties.

Joan Sweeney, chair of the UA Foundation board’s investment committee, agreed Barker “strives to go above and beyond with respect to disclosure for donors, trustees and all other UA Foundation constituents.”

Sweeney also noted Barker’s investment acumen: “Craig’s strict standard for diligence combined with his unsurpassed work ethic has resulted in a diverse portfolio with a long-range investment horizon for the UA Foundation's endowment.”

Richard Silverman, chair of the UA Foundation Board of Trustees, believes Barker’s approach benefits many.

“Craig demonstrates a level of expertise we can all be proud of, on behalf of donors, alumni, students, faculty and the communities we serve. His leadership of the investment committee exemplifies the best in service to the greater UA,” he said.

Prudent investment of donated funds is crucial to the university’s future, said John-Paul Roczniak, president and CEO of the UA Foundation, as philanthropy is an increasingly important avenue for achieving the UA’s goals in the areas of research, academics, infrastructure and educational access.

“The UA community is fortunate to have someone with Craig’s caliber of integrity and expertise stewarding these assets. I am thrilled Craig is receiving this well-deserved recognition,” said Roczniak.

Barker joined the UA Foundation in 2000 and was promoted to his current position in 2006. Prior to working at the UA Foundation, he served for 16 years at Ernst & Young.

Chief Investment Officer magazine reports news, opinion and research focused on investment issues affecting the world’s largest financial institutions. Other finalists for the award in the foundation category included investment officers from the American Red Cross, the Kresge Foundation and the WK Kellogg Foundation.
